L’esprit des pierres  

Des mégalithes aux abbayes cisterciennes en passant par les pyramides d’Égypte, l’homme a su, de tous temps, mettre la pierre au service de son imaginaire. Depuis les origines, il a bâti pour donner forme à ses visions, célébrer les dieux qu’il s’inventait, honorer ses morts, impressionner ses rivaux, se protéger des éléments et des agressions. 

Dans ses mains, la roche pesante peut se transformer en rêve aérien, exprimer l’invisible, exalter la légèreté de l’âme. Au plus profond de ses pensées, il y a aussi le désir de durer, de prolonger à travers ses édifices son existence éphémère, de transmettre aux générations futures une spiritualité ou une compréhension du monde. 

Roc et sable, densité et légèreté, compacité et fluidité, deux aspects, deux états de la même matière qui rendent tout possible. Évoluer dans ces lieux, parfois en ruines, c’est renforcer la densité du temps. L’usure, la patine, l’érosion nous renvoient à notre propre finitude tout en fécondant nos rêves. 

Les images de cette série en sont comme un condensé. Des détails d’architectures bien réels, mais sortis de leur contexte, y sont associés aux éléments naturels dont ils sont issus et où ils retourneront un jour. Matière du temps sous la lumière. L’homme a depuis longtemps déserté ces lieux qui poursuivent leur évolution, retournant aux origines. Seul plane son esprit lié à l’esprit des pierres, et pour longtemps encore…

The spirit of stones

From megaliths to Cistercian abbeys to the pyramids of Egypt, man has always known how to use stone to serve his imagination. Since the beginning, he has built to give shape to his visions, to celebrate the gods he invented, to honor his dead, to impress his rivals, to protect himself from the elements and aggression.

In his hands, the heavy rock can be transformed into an aerial dream, express the invisible, exalt the lightness of the soul. Deep in his thoughts, there is also the desire to last, to prolong his ephemeral existence through his buildings, to transmit to future generations a spirituality or an understanding of the world.

Rock and sand, density and lightness, compactness and fluidity, two aspects, two states of the same matter that make everything possible. To evolve in these places, sometimes in ruins, is to reinforce the density of time. Wear, patina, erosion send us back to our own finitude while fertilizing our dreams.

The images in this series are like a summary of it. Very real architectural details, but taken out of context, are associated with the natural elements from which they come and where they will return one day. Matter of time under the light. Man has long since deserted these places which continue their evolution, returning to their origins. Only his spirit hovers, linked to the spirit of the stones, and for a long time to come…
